ORLEN Baja Poland top contenders: Vladimir Vasilyev

(22.08.2019) Vasilyev is one of three drivers on the ORLEN Baja Poland entry list who have already won FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies. This means that driver shall be considered as one of the main candidates to win in Poland.

Vasilyev celebrated his very first World Cup victory, which he scored in Italy.

Just like many other World Cup competitors Vasiliev tackled the ultimate off-road challenge, which of course is the Dakar Rally. He made his first outing in South America marathon in 2013, when he finished 16th being the best rookie. It was 2015, when  driver reached finish of Dakar Rally in 5th position, what is his best result in this event, the same as for Przygoński. Vasilyev achieved this result behind the wheel of MINI. Vasiliev has Africa Eco Race victory under his belt too. Vasilyev won this African rally in 2017. In the last edition of this event Vladimir came second.

For many years Vasilyev competed behind the wheel of different X-Raid-built BMWs and MINIs. However, in the middle of 2018 season (after Italian Baja), World Cup winner decided to swap MINI for Toyota Hilux. He believed that Overdrive-run Toyota, powered with petrol engine, will be more competitive in oncoming Baja events. During his 2018 FIA World Cup Vasilyev managed to win only in Spain and eventually he finished the season in third position, behind Jakub Przygonski and Martin Prokop.

Vasilyev shares the cockpit of his Toyota Hilux with his fellow countryman Konstantin Zhilcov, who is a former co-driver of five-time Baja Poland winner Krzysztof Holowczyc. Before Polish FIA World Cup counter duo is second in series standings, just 10 points behind the leaders (Terranova/Graue). ORLEN Baja Poland is the event which Vasilyev has never won. His best result in Poland is 3rd place in 2018 edition. However, Vasilyev has a wealth of experience and success both at home and abroad and for sure he is capable of winning ORLEN Baja Poland. But on his way to victory, he needs to outpace local aces – Przygonski and Holowczyc, as well as Argentinian Orlando Terranova, who have won as many as three previous FIA World Cup events.
